| Sunday, May 18th, 2008 2:00 pm | Freedom Elementary School, 25 Holly Dr, Freedom
Bring your own tea cup as once again we celebrate the Garden Program at Freedom Elementary School!
Greg Muck is the teacher for the garden and cooking program. He has once again invited us to participate in a garden party. The garden is lovely this time of year, and a wonderful setting for a California-English Tea Party. We'll be serving tea with all the trimmings, including tea sandwiches, cookies and cakes, scones, strawberries and cream. We invite you to get out your garden party clothes, and don't forget to bring a tea cup; if you don't have one languishing on a shelf, try your local thrift store.
Don't miss this opportunity to learn about the garden and cooking program, raise some funds to help teach some very enthusiastic kids, and have a good time.
Donation: Advance reservations $20 per person, $15 teacher or student; family groups of up to 4 persons including children accompanied by adults $40.00. Please send your pre-paid reservation by May 12th. Some tickets will be available at the door for $25. For more information, contact: Kimberly Wright at slowfoodmb@calcentral.com

We're not just a dinner club! There are quite a few good books about food and society available, and Allan Lonnberg has agreed to lead series of discussions.
Our book this time is 'Sweetness and Power: The Place of Sugar in Modern History' by Sidney W. Mintz, 1985; it's available as a paperback from Penquin Books. Jean Thomas has suggested that a sugar tasting would be interesting to accompany the discussion. Suggestions as to an appropriate simple dinner to follow are welcome. Perhaps something tropical?
In the interest of variety, it would be great if someone else were to host this gathering. We'll do so if no one else is interested. No charge to the host! We can provide wineglasses, plates, flatware, cloth napkins, and any other basics.
We'd like to limit the discussion group to 12 or so. The cost to attend is $5 per person. Please bring wine, beer, or other beverage of your choice; discussion can be thirsty work.

Once again we will join together with the Open Space Alliance for a farm dinner.
The Open Space Alliance of Santa Cruz protects lands with significant natural and scenic qualities, including rare wildlife habitat, watershed protection features, sustainable agriculture use and wildlife linkages between protected lands. This is accomplished through education, outreach and broad-based participation in the local community and the national land trust network. One of their projects was raising funds to purchase the Cardoza Ranch in the Watsonville Slough watershed, where they established agricultural and natural resource area easements and returned the land to private ownership with the sale to High Ground Organics, the site of our wonderful strawberry feast in 2003 as well as dinners in 2006 and 2007.
The cost of this event is $60 per person, $40 of which is a tax-deductible donation to the Open Space Alliance. (20 additional spaces will be available through the OSA; contact them at osa@santacruzosa.org or 831-423-0700) For more information, contact: Kimberly at slowfoodmb@calcentral.com
